The Absolute Linear Encoder. As Ive come to understand it.

Throughout the years, Linear encoders have changed dramatically in both operating priniple and electrical communication to the controlling hardware.

Below is a graphical representation of the an absolute coded scale.

There are three standard absolute position formats available industry wide

  • Fanuc Serial Data
  • EnDat Serial Data
  • Mitsubishi Serial Data

Fanuc Serial Data:

Fanuc Absolute Linear and Angle Enocders operate using purely binary communication, utilzing the absolute position track of the device during the entire measurement process. Most of the Parameters required to manipulate linear encoders with absolute protocols are included in the Servo Setting Screen (in the 16,18,21 series)

Common Parameters to be adjusted switching from a Linear Scale to a Rotary Feedback or visa versa.

  1. 1815
  2. 2024
  3. 2084
  4. 2085
  5. 2185

Parameter 1815 Bit Labeled "OPT" is the Parameter that turns on or off the funtion of having a seperate linear encoder from your motor feedback. Turning that bit on or off for the individual axis basically tells the control to look at the input provided at the Fanuc SDU or not.

Parameter 2024 is the number of feedback position pulses and cannot be set to greater than 32767 is the value needs to exceed that:

Parameter 2185 is the position pulse feedback coefficient. If you need to use this parameter than the general rule is to keep 2185 as low a number as possible and 2024 as high a number as possible.

Parameter 2084 and 2085 create a Ratio call the FFG or Flexible Feed Gear Ration 2084 is the numerator and 2085 is the denominator. These Parameters directly correlate to the specified detection units.

For Example with a 1um detection unit set If your ball screw has a 10mm pitch and you have 1000 pulses per rotation your F-FG would be 1/100.

Endat Serial Data

Because of Earlier EnDat 2.1 binary transimission speeds were slower than they are capable of now EnDat Absloute positioning required the use of an Incremental 1VPP track that would track position at high speeds.

Transmission speeds have since increased resulting in pure binary transmission with the presence of an absolute track for troubleshooting and backwards compatibility.

Heidenhain Controls are a bit easier to set up the linear encoders typically based on model you have a seperate set of parameters for the Seperate feedback devices. They are not included in the velocity loop calculations.

Early LC 181 Models had a 16um grating period on the 1VPP track, subsequent LC 182 and LC 183 models have a 20 um grating period on the incremental track; This has caused a few issues particularly on Siemens Controls where those values appear to be adjusted globally in some systems which may require an update to all scales simultaneously.
